Potato producers and agricultural organizations plan joint protests in Cyprus
Potato producers held an open meeting in Liopetri on Tuesday evening to address ongoing challenges in the primary sector. The attendees, including members of agricultural organizations, discussed critical issues such as water shortages, rising production costs, and the need for compensation for lost income. A central point of contention is the water allocation planned for the second half of 2026. Andreas Karyos, head of the Potato Producers Organizing Committee, confirmed that a dynamic protest event will be organized in coordination with agricultural groups. The specific scale and nature of the demonstrations remain pending, contingent on upcoming consultations with various ministries, the Department of Forests, and the Minister of Agriculture. A meeting between the producers and the Minister of Agriculture has already been scheduled to discuss these grievances. Karyos expressed a hope that these discussions will yield positive outcomes to preserve the viability of the agricultural sector.
