Arson attacks target New Democracy officials in Thessaloniki
On Thursday morning, a series of three coordinated arson attacks using gas canisters targeted the residences of New Democracy party officials in Thessaloniki. The incidents occurred between 04:18 and 04:35 in the Pilea, Toumpa, and Charilaou districts, affecting the homes of Zisis Ioakeimovits, Savvas Anastasiadis, and Afroditi Nestora. While no injuries were reported in the first two attacks, the third in Charilaou caused a fire that destroyed two vehicles and two motorcycles, resulting in five injuries. Vagia Nestora, the 70-year-old mother of Afroditi Nestora, suffered severe burns and respiratory problems, later succumbing to her injuries. The Greek Counter-Terrorism Unit has launched an investigation, analyzing surveillance footage that shows suspects on motorcycles wearing helmets. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis condemned the violence, calling for zero tolerance toward such acts and promising to bring the perpetrators to justice. Investigators suspect the targets were specifically chosen for their lack of police protection.
