Cyprus Union of Municipalities criticizes landfill tax implementation and planning
The Cyprus Union of Municipalities has expressed formal concerns regarding the timeline and implementation method of the Waste Landfill Tax. The organization argues that municipalities and citizens should not bear the financial burden caused by the state's failure to provide necessary waste management infrastructure. Key concerns include a lack of integrated strategic planning for organic waste and overall waste disposal. The Union stated that current municipal financial obligations already present a significant challenge. Furthermore, the organization warned that delays in decision-making and the absence of a national strategy jeopardize 23 million euros in European funding. These funds were intended for developing recycling, sorting at source, and modern waste management facilities. The Union has called upon the government to urgently adopt a comprehensive plan to ensure environmental targets are met without passing costs onto the public.
