UN envoy María Ángela Holguín provides update on Cyprus settlement efforts

UN Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín visited Cyprus from June 7 to 14, 2026, holding meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. Following her visit, she held talks in New York with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who remains committed to finding a mutually beneficial solution for all Cypriots. Holguín subsequently traveled to Ankara and Athens for discussions with the foreign ministers of Turkey and Greece, Hakan Fidan and the Greek Foreign Minister. During her briefings, the envoy urged stakeholders to move beyond past difficulties and expressed a willingness to explore new phases for negotiations. She criticized recent media speculation and rumors, asserting that no official documents have been issued by her office. Holguín emphasized that Guterres is currently evaluating strategies to encourage both parties to take concrete steps toward a final resolution. She maintained that building trust is essential, requiring wisdom, empathy, and collective effort from all sides.
