Environmental groups express concern over activities at Lady's Mile beach

Environmental organizations BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria have issued a joint statement raising concerns over the protection of the Lady’s Mile wetland area. The groups argue that the area, which is part of the protected Akrotiri complex, is facing increasing pressure during the critical breeding season for sea turtles and various bird species. Observed issues include unauthorized nighttime parties, excessive noise, bright lighting, and the failure of businesses to remove infrastructure like sunbeds between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM as required by law. The organizations claim that regulation of these activities has deteriorated over the last five years. They are urging the British Bases administration to publicly disclose how it ensures compliance with environmental laws and business operating conditions. While the administration acknowledges the challenge of balancing development with conservation, the NGOs emphasize that past precedents demonstrate that effective enforcement is possible when administrative will is applied.
