Environmental groups express concern over Lady's Mile status
Environmental organizations BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria have issued a joint statement raising concerns regarding the protection of the Lady's Mile area. This site is part of the Akrotiri wetlands, a protected zone of high ecological value. The groups argue that recent summer activities are incompatible with environmental regulations and existing operating licenses for businesses in the area. Reported issues include night parties, increased beach usage after dark, high-intensity lighting, and excessive noise. Furthermore, the organizations noted that heavy infrastructure, such as sunbeds, is not being removed between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. as required by law. They also highlighted the presence of unauthorized water sports and floating structures. The current period is critical as it coincides with the reproductive season for sea turtles and various bird species that rely on the coastal habitat. The NGOs have requested that the British Bases Administration publicly clarify how they intend to enforce environmental laws and operational terms. The groups stated that the condition of the region appears to be deteriorating gradually.
