Three deaths reported during Mexico's World Cup victory celebrations

Following Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the World Cup on Tuesday, approximately one million people gathered in Mexico City to celebrate the team's first advancement to the knockout stages since 1986. The festivities, centered around the Angel of Independence monument and the Paseo de la Reforma, turned tragic as three individuals died from suffocation during the mass gatherings. Health authorities confirmed the victims include a 44-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman, and a 48-year-old woman. Emergency personnel administered CPR and first aid on-site before transferring the victims to local hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada extended condolences to the victims' families and urged fans to celebrate responsibly. Prior to the incident, Mayor Brugada had advised supporters to avoid the densely populated Angel of Independence area. While some initial reports cited only two fatalities, health authorities later confirmed the third death in an updated statement.
