Israeli defense official proposes regional security axis involving Greece and Cyprus
On Wednesday, Major General (ret.) Amir Baram, Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, spoke at the Herzliya Conference at Reichman University regarding regional security. Baram proposed a strategic axis stretching from India through the United Arab Emirates to Greece and Cyprus. He stated that the threat posed by Iran requires Israel to expand its strategic partnerships. According to Baram, Israel’s technological and operational expertise combined with the economic power of Gulf states could form a new security and economic front. He emphasized that these regional collaborations are intended to enhance Israel's strategic flexibility rather than replace its core alliance with the United States. Additionally, Baram noted that discussions are currently underway regarding a new US-Israel security memorandum. He argued that the relationship with Washington should be anchored in both shared values and tangible strategic interests.
