Residents and political parties oppose new migrant facility in Nicosia

Residents of the Lykavittos area in Nicosia and local parents have expressed strong opposition to the state's plan to establish a shelter for unaccompanied minor migrants. The proposed site is located approximately 30 meters from the local primary school, leading to significant concerns regarding student safety and local security. Residents, represented by individuals like Stelios Hatzigeorgiou and Photos Konstantinidis, argue that the government failed to inform the Nicosia Municipality or local citizens before proposing the project. Critics claim the site selection violates urban planning laws unless special exceptions are granted by the Council of Ministers. While the government describes the shelter as a temporary facility for minors awaiting repatriation, some residents report hearing it would be an open-style structure, citing concerns over potential nuisance and crime. The political party ELAM has formally opposed the project, voting against it in the municipal committee and advocating for closed facilities outside urban areas. Residents have initiated a signature collection campaign and warned of potential protests if their concerns remain unaddressed.
