Escalation in drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine
On July 2, 2026, Russia launched an overnight drone attack on Kyiv, resulting in one death and eleven injuries. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko advised residents to take shelter as drone debris fell in two districts, causing a fire in the city center. Concurrently, the Polish armed forces scrambled fighter jets as a precautionary measure to secure their airspace during the attack. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its air defenses destroyed 419 Ukrainian drones between June 29 and June 30, including strikes targeting the Moscow region, Crimea, and Krasnodar. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the interception of fifty drones heading toward the capital, reporting no casualties or significant damage in the city. These events represent a significant surge in drone warfare, following a previous Ukrainian strike involving 660 drones days earlier. Both nations continue to report heavy use of aerial assets in their ongoing conflict.
