Ongoing debate over the future of the Paphos Public Garden
The Paphos Public Garden remains at the center of a long-standing dispute regarding its future use. The Municipality of Paphos, the local Metropolis, and the Archbishopric have yet to reach a definitive agreement on the development of this central urban area. The Church has proposed the construction of a major temple, citing the religious and historical significance of Paphos. Conversely, many citizens and the Paphos Environmental and Cultural Association (PPOH) advocate for preserving the space as a public park. The PPOH argues that the city faces an urgent need for green spaces to combat rising temperatures and the urban heat island effect caused by increased concrete, marble, and asphalt surfaces. The site has remained largely underutilized for years, leading to criticism from residents who view the current impasse as a missed opportunity for urban development. The municipal council has not yet clarified its position following recent changes in its composition. The conflict is framed by some as a struggle between religious expansion and environmental preservation, with stakeholders failing to find a common solution.
