New European Union packaging regulations to affect Cyprus food and beverage businesses
Starting in February 2027, new European Union packaging regulations will require food and beverage outlets across Cyprus to accept personal reusable containers from customers. This initiative is part of a broader EU regulation on packaging waste management, which is directly applicable to all member states. The Cypriot government must now develop enforcement mechanisms, designate supervisory authorities, and establish penalties for non-compliance. Businesses will be required to implement internal protocols, train staff, and manage hygiene standards for customer-provided containers. Beginning in February 2028, most establishments must also offer their own reusable packaging through a deposit or return system, with exemptions for small companies with fewer than 10 employees and a turnover under 2 million euros. Furthermore, by January 2030, the use of single-use tableware for food and drinks consumed on-site will be largely prohibited. Former Environment Commissioner Charalambos Theopemptu noted that these changes require significant administrative preparation and operational restructuring. Separately, the Coffee Friends Club is promoting reusable cup usage through the 'Bring Your Own Cup Day' event on July 18, involving 19 local coffee shops.
