EAC trade unions announce industrial action at power stations

Four trade unions representing workers at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC)—EPOPAI, SYDIKEK-EAC, SEPAIK, and SYVAHK—have announced industrial action starting Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 07:00. The power stations in Vasiliko, Dhekelia, and Moni will operate exclusively with skeleton staff, meaning no additions or subtractions of power generation units will occur. The unions argue that state inertia and a lack of strategic planning have caused long-standing issues, including increased electricity costs, equipment stress, and threats to supply security. Previous industrial actions took place on February 27, March 18, and April 23, 2026, but unions claim no progress has been made on their concerns. The management of the EAC has acknowledged the receipt of the unions' letter and stated that the issues raised will be reviewed by the board of directors. While the unions warn of potential risks to the electricity supply, the state and the EAC administration maintain that they are evaluating the long-term sustainability of the organization.
