Bear-related incidents and accidental bear spray discharge reported in Japan
Five people were hospitalized in a Nagoya post office after a foreign national accidentally discharged bear deterrent spray. Although eight individuals felt unwell, none of the injuries were reported as serious, and the man involved apologized for the mistake. Meanwhile, Japanese authorities are investigating a potential sixth fatal bear attack this year after a body with bite marks was discovered in a mountainous region in northern Japan. The Ministry of Environment reports that five people have died from bear attacks since April 1, marking the highest number of casualties for this three-month period since data collection began in 2018. Last year saw a record-breaking 13 deaths, and bear sightings have surged to over 50,000 in the fiscal year ending March. Scientists attribute this rise to an increasing bear population and the decline of human populations in rural areas, leading to more frequent encounters in urban settings. Recent measures include a four-day operation to capture a bear in Utsunomiya in June.
