Staffing and infrastructure issues at Makario Hospital discussed in parliament

During a session of the Parliamentary Health Committee, concerns were raised regarding the pediatric oncology ward at Makario Hospital, which is currently overcrowded. The head of the Parents' Association, Louiza Stefanidou, reported that 15 children were being treated with only two nurses on duty, highlighting chronic understaffing. PASYDY nursing branch president Prodromos Argyridis confirmed these staffing shortages. OKYPY's Chief Financial Officer, Roberto Karahannas, acknowledged the issue and announced plans to hire two additional nurses. Karahannas also provided an update on construction works at the hospital, which cost 70 million euros and are occurring at six different sites. He noted that the pediatric surgery clinic is expected to open on July 12, with a 1.5-month delay. The renovation of the thalassemia clinic is due for its first phase delivery on July 25, while a new A&E department is projected for completion by early 2025, pending further construction delays.
