Ilias Anagnostopoulos to replace Christos Mylonopoulos in Mafia State investigation team

Christos Mylonopoulos has resigned from the independent criminal investigation team appointed by the Council of Ministers to examine the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority's report on the 'Mafia State' book. His resignation followed public criticism regarding a potential conflict of interest, as he previously served as a lawyer for Michail Zolotas in the 'Focus' case. Mylonopoulos denied any wrongdoing or influence, stating his departure was intended to protect the institutional process. The government, represented by spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, confirmed that the proposal to appoint Ilias Anagnostopoulos, an emeritus professor of criminal law at the University of Athens, will be submitted to the Council of Ministers this coming Wednesday. While the government maintains that the appointment of Anagnostopoulos is based on his high scientific standing, opposition critics have raised questions regarding his alleged previous legal work for Tal Dilian, although the government clarified that the 'black van' case is not within the scope of this investigation. The team is concurrently finalizing logistical arrangements, including office space and support staff, to commence their work immediately following the new appointment.
