Cyprus ministry initiates stricter school bus safety inspections
Following an Audit Office report dated June 18, the Cypriot Ministry of Transport has launched a rigorous inspection program for school buses. Data revealed that 35% of school buses checked at state facilities were unfit, while 19% of vehicles previously approved by private inspection centers failed subsequent state testing. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis confirmed that all school buses must undergo inspections at state facilities to ensure compliance by September. The ministry is implementing new legal provisions to directly supervise private testing centers and will conduct year-round spot checks on all buses, including those used for field trips and private schools. Transportation companies have expressed concern, arguing that delays and high workloads contribute to current issues, while educational organizations have emphasized the critical need for student safety. Parliament's Transport Committee is monitoring the situation and plans to revisit the matter after the summer break.
