Upgrade works ongoing at Makarios Hospital amid safety concerns

The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) is currently overseeing comprehensive upgrade projects at the 45-year-old Makarios Hospital, with a scheduled completion date of April 2027. The project, described by officials as repairing an aircraft while in flight, is being conducted while the facility remains operational. The Parliamentary Health Committee reviewed the issue following public concerns regarding excessive noise and dust affecting the Pediatric Oncology Clinic. OKYPY financial director Robertos Karachannas stated that relocating patients was deemed unfeasible due to simultaneous work occurring in six areas. To mitigate disruptions, the organization has established a multidisciplinary committee and appointed coordinators for communication between technical staff and medical personnel. Special air filtration systems have been installed to manage dust levels, and noise-sensitive scheduling protocols have been implemented. Officials admitted that some inconvenience is unavoidable due to the deteriorated state of the existing building infrastructure.
