Parliamentary committee discusses installation of countdown timers at traffic light intersections
The parliamentary committee on transport, communications and works is revisiting the mandatory installation of countdown timers at intersections equipped with photo-enforcement systems. This follows a ruling by the Supreme Constitutional Court, which declared the previous legislation on this matter unconstitutional. On March 13, 2025, the plenary session had initially passed a law requiring these timers, arguing they would improve road safety and aid drivers during signal changes. Public works authorities have argued against the installation, citing technical incompatibility with existing systems. Sotiris Ioannou, the committee chair, criticized the government's stance as incorrect and stated the committee will demand written documentation regarding consultations with technical companies. Meanwhile, MP Valentinos Fakontis expressed concern that the current photo-enforcement system has become a revenue-generating tool rather than a preventive safety measure. The committee plans to continue its deliberations on the matter in September.
