Veteran journalist Giorgos Tsalakos passes away at the age of approximately 70

Giorgos Tsalakos, a prominent figure in Greek and Cypriot media, passed away on July 2, 2026, following a long battle with cancer. Born in the village of Lysi in the Famagusta district, he studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His career spanned nearly five decades, beginning in Greece with roles at the newspaper Exormisi, the PASOK Press Office, and ERT, where he served as News Director from 1981 to 1990. Upon returning to Cyprus, he played a pivotal role in the establishment and development of private television channels, including Antenna, Alpha, and Omega. He served as the General Manager of Omega Channel from 2018 to 2022 and was the Chairman of the Board at the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) from 2013 to 2015. Throughout his career, he was widely recognized for his professional integrity, editorial vision, and mentorship of young journalists. President Nikos Christodoulides and various media organizations, including the Cyprus Journalists' Union, have expressed their condolences, highlighting his significant contributions to modern television journalism in Cyprus.
