Wildfires spread across southern France amid heatwave and strong winds
Two thousand firefighters are battling forest fires along the French Mediterranean coast, exacerbated by high temperatures and strong winds. In Canet-en-Roussillon, near the Spanish border, fires damaged a marina, destroying a yacht and warehouses, while 1,500 people were evacuated from campsites. Operations at the Perpignan airport were suspended, and smoke reached as far as Marseille. Significant blazes in the Aude region have consumed 900 hectares of land. While fires near Marseille were brought under control, the situation remains precarious. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu attended a crisis management meeting as his minority government faces a vote of no confidence regarding its response to the heatwave. French meteorological services have issued warnings for another extreme heat wave expected in the coming week.
