EU announces Modernization Fund disbursements and approves faster renewable energy permitting

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank announced the disbursement of 2.5 billion euros from the Modernization Fund to support 51 energy projects across 11 EU member states. These funds, derived from the EU Emissions Trading System, bring the total amount allocated since January 2021 to 23.2 billion euros. The beneficiary countries include Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Slovenia, with individual allocations ranging from 20.2 million to 636.9 million euros. The investment aims to modernize energy systems, improve efficiency in industry and transport, and promote renewable energy storage. Concurrently, the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy approved a proposal to accelerate the permitting process for renewable energy projects and electrical grids. This legislative initiative seeks to reduce energy costs by streamlining administrative procedures, including a three-month limit for grid connection approvals and the creation of a national digital portal for applications. MEPs also introduced a presumption of overriding public interest for renewable projects to facilitate rapid development.
