New decree issued for foot-and-mouth disease containment

On July 3, 2026, the Veterinary Services of the Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment issued Decree No. 5 of 2026, replacing the previous Decree No. 4. This update, prompted by an improved epidemiological situation, introduces gradual easing of restrictive measures while maintaining animal health protections. New provisions allow the movement of pigs, cattle, and sheep between farms, as well as the transport of cattle to fattening units and sheep to slaughterhouses, provided that vaccination requirements and documentation are met. Essential prohibitions concerning grazing and the movement of agricultural equipment remain in effect, alongside designated restriction zones. Dimitris Epameinondas, head of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association, confirmed that 70 recent laboratory samples tested negative for the virus, and vaccination efforts continue. Additionally, 90% of compensation payments for livestock culling and related losses are expected to be completed by Friday, with the remainder following next week after resolving individual administrative issues.
