Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu resigns from office
Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on Friday, an act that automatically triggers the resignation of his entire government. Munteanu, who assumed office in November 2025 following the September 2025 parliamentary elections, did not provide a detailed explanation for his decision. He stated via the platform X that he could no longer fulfill his duties in accordance with his principles and beliefs. This political development poses a challenge for President Maia Sandu and the ruling pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). Under Moldovan constitutional procedure, President Sandu will now hold consultations with parliamentary parties to designate a new candidate for the premiership. Munteanu, a former World Bank official with 20 years of experience abroad, indicated his intention to continue serving the country in a different capacity. The move follows the PAS's recent electoral victory aimed at advancing Moldova’s European Union integration path.
