EMEL proposes student transport service to reduce traffic in Limassol
The Limassol Passenger Transport Company (EMEL) has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Transport to transport up to 1,000 students daily to after-school activities. CEO Giorgos Kyriakou stated that the study, submitted in the first week of June, is currently under evaluation. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion in Limassol by potentially removing up to 1,000 private vehicles from the roads during afternoon hours. The service would utilize a specialized digital platform to optimize routes, similar to systems currently being piloted in Europe. EMEL currently handles approximately 5,000 students during morning school hours, but afternoon transport presents a more complex scheduling challenge due to diverse destinations every 45 minutes. Kyriakou clarified that the proposal does not strictly require full state funding, leaving the decision regarding potential costs and public access to government authorities. The initiative is intended as a long-term strategy rather than a one-year program.
