Cyprus increases positions for contract soldiers to become non-commissioned officers

Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas announced that the number of permanent positions for contract soldiers (SYOP) transitioning to contract non-commissioned officers (SYP) has been increased from 250 to 400. This decision was made in consultation with the Ministry of Finance and follows the receipt of exam results presented by Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Athena Kyriakidou. The announcement occurred at the Ministry of Defense in the presence of the Parliamentary Defense Committee and Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou. According to the Defense Minister, the increase remains within the approved budgetary framework of the ministry. The expansion is attributed to high candidate interest, the need for additional personnel to support the SAFE mechanism programs, and a policy goal to acknowledge the contribution of contract soldiers to the National Guard's operational readiness. This measure aims to bolster the professional staffing of the armed forces.
