Cyprus begins implementation of 2026 disability welfare law

The Cyprus Council of Ministers has approved the gradual implementation of the 2026 Law on Social Participation, Inclusion, and Independent Living for People with Disabilities. This legislation, which was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives in April, aims to modernize welfare services. The first phase includes five new independent living benefits, with vehicle purchase grants and mobility allowances taking effect upon publication in the Official Gazette. Vehicle purchase subsidies will increase by 50%, with new tiers reaching up to €13,500. Eligibility for this grant has been expanded to include children under 18 and individuals between 70 and 77 years old who have received it only once. Mobility allowances are set to rise by 33%, with monthly rates increasing to €100 and €200. These specific adjustments are retroactive to January 1, 2026, with a lump-sum payment planned for the first six months. Further benefits, including home care and day center support, are also slated for future rollout.
