Akel requests relocation of military camp in Liopetri

The Famagusta district committee of the political party Akel has formally requested that Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas reconsider the location of the Modestos Panteli military camp in Liopetri. The party argues that the facility, established around 1980 on former community football grounds, is now situated in a densely populated residential area adjacent to the village's first primary school. Akel representative Christos Nicolaou stated that while the party does not question the role of the National Guard, they are concerned about the safety implications of having an active military installation near children and residents. The party has requested official information regarding safety assessments and potential relocation plans. Nicolaou clarified that while he does not believe the site currently stores dangerous munitions, he remains concerned about the proximity of armed personnel to the school. The Ministry of Defence has been contacted for comment, though no formal decision on relocation has been announced.
