EDEK party holds extraordinary congress amid internal tensions

On July 5, 2026, the EDEK party held an extraordinary nationwide congress in Nicosia to address organizational restructuring following poor electoral results. Delegates voted to hold a statutory congress in October 2026, followed by an electoral congress in December 2026. The party agreed to utilize the 2015 membership registry to resolve previous disputes and established a new committee to oversee membership registration and coordination. Additionally, the party decided to conduct an independent financial audit covering the period from the presidency of Giannakis Omirou to the present day. Plans were also announced to hire an expert for party reorganization based on new financial constraints following the loss of state funding.
