Greek national security advisor deceived by Russian pranksters
Thanos Dokos, the National Security Advisor to the Greek Prime Minister, was recently deceived into a video call by Russian pranksters known as Vovan and Lexus. The pranksters posed as Ukrainian officials to discuss sensitive diplomatic and military issues, including concerns over Ukrainian maritime drones in Greek waters. During the call, Dokos emphasized the importance of avoiding incidents in Greek territory, citing the upcoming election period and the potential impact on public and political stability. While the Greek government officially characterized the event as a hybrid attack involving advanced artificial intelligence, the pranksters claimed they simply used a Gmail account and makeup to facilitate the contact. The opposition party PASOK has publicly requested the resignation of Mr. Dokos due to the security lapse. Government officials maintain that no classified or confidential information was leaked during the conversation. They noted that efforts are underway to upgrade communications security protocols in response to the evolving nature of hybrid threats. Previous high-profile targets of these pranksters include David Cameron, Andrzej Duda, and Ben Wallace.
