Eurostat reports current account figures for Cyprus and the EU in Q1 2026
According to data released by Eurostat on Friday, Cyprus recorded a current account deficit of €1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2026. This figure marks an increase compared to the €0.8 billion deficit reported in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the €1.0 billion deficit in the first quarter of 2025. Additionally, the Cypriot services account recorded a surplus of €1.2 billion during the same period. In contrast, the European Union as a whole saw its seasonally adjusted current account surplus increase to €113.4 billion, or 2.4% of its GDP, during the first quarter of 2026. This EU-wide result is an improvement from the €99.2 billion surplus recorded in the final quarter of 2025. The EU's performance was driven by gains in services and primary income, despite a decline in the trade in goods surplus, which fell to €66.7 billion. The report provides a comparative overview of external balances across member states.
