Customs authorities seize untaxed tobacco products at crossing points
On June 30, 2026, customs officers at the Ledra Street crossing point arrested a Romanian national traveling to Ireland. The individual was found in possession of six cartons of cigarettes that lacked required health warnings and traceability codes, indicating they were untaxed. The suspect was released after paying a settlement fine of 360 euros, and the goods were confiscated. On July 1, 2026, at the Ayios Dometios crossing, officers intercepted two British tourists in a taxi bound for the United Kingdom. The search resulted in the discovery of 10 cartons of cigarettes and 250 grams of rolling tobacco, all of which lacked official health markings and security features. These products were also seized, and the individuals were arrested for customs offenses. The confiscated items were identified as untaxed due to the absence of mandatory Greek and Turkish language health warnings and traceability identifiers.
