Cyprus launches social enterprise registry and funding scheme
The Registrar of Cooperative Societies and Social Enterprises in Cyprus, Kypros Protopapas, announced that three companies have been registered in the new social enterprise registry, with two more applications pending. This announcement was made during a press conference in Nicosia on July 4, 2026, where the legal framework for such businesses was presented. Established under 2023 legislation, the system defines two categories: general-purpose enterprises and integration enterprises. Integration enterprises focus on employing individuals with disabilities, requiring at least 10% staff with disabilities and 30% from vulnerable groups. General-purpose enterprises promote social, cultural, or environmental goals. Financial regulations mandate that 70% of revenue must come from goods or services, and require the reinvestment of 80% of profits for general enterprises or 40% for integration enterprises. A wage inequality cap is also in place, limiting the highest salary to four times the lowest. The government has allocated a total of 600,000 euros for 2026-2027 to support these entities, with grants of 10,000 euros available per business.
