Turkish comedian Deniz Goktas remanded in custody following stand-up performance

Turkish stand-up comedian Deniz Goktas was remanded in custody on July 2, 2025, after returning to Turkey from abroad. His arrest follows a 90-minute comedy special titled 'Olu Deniz', filmed in Istanbul on June 1 and uploaded to YouTube on June 24, where it reached approximately nine million views. Istanbul prosecutors initiated an investigation based on 185 public complaints, alleging that the performance contained insults toward the Turkish President and religious values. In his set, Goktas satirized the current political climate, including references to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opposition figures. The comedian maintained that the material had been performed live for three years to over 100,000 people without legal issues. Despite voluntarily returning to Turkey knowing an investigation was underway, he was detained at the airport and later appeared in court in handcuffs. The proceedings were marked by heavy security, including police barricades and anti-riot vehicles outside the courthouse.
