Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported that confirmed Ebola cases have reached 1,502, including 473 fatalities. The outbreak, which was officially declared on May 15, is centered in the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. The current epidemic is attributed to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which no vaccine or established treatment currently exists. Two clinical trials for potential treatments were recently initiated following the start of the epidemic. Health officials indicate that the virus was circulating undetected for some time before the official declaration. Challenges in managing the crisis include local distrust and ongoing instability in the region. According to the World Health Organization, the Ebola virus has claimed at least 15,000 lives in Africa over the last 50 years, with fatality rates ranging from 25% to 90%.
