Diplomatic efforts intensify for Cyprus peace negotiations
United Nations officials are conducting separate meetings with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot representatives to prepare for potential peace talks in late July or early August 2026. Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, is scheduled to visit Brussels in mid-July before returning to Cyprus in the third week of the month. Meanwhile, EU leadership, including European Council President Antonio Costa and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on July 7-8 to discuss bilateral relations and the Cyprus issue. The Greek Cypriot side, represented by Menelaos Menelaou, emphasizes that the goal remains a bizonal, bicommunal federation. However, Turkey continues to advocate for a two-state solution, which remains a primary obstacle. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently highlighted the importance of security cooperation between Turkey and the European Union, viewing it as a potential catalyst for progress. The UN process is characterized as a long-term initiative rather than an abrupt development.
