Arizona hospital investigation follows live infant declared dead

On February 8, an 18-month-old child was transported to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center in Arizona after being pulled from a home swimming pool. Despite two police officers noting potential signs of life, the attending physician declared the child dead. According to official police reports, the doctor dismissed the officers' concerns and insisted on his professional authority. Officers observed what appeared to be breathing and audible gasps from the child even after the death declaration was made. The infant was subsequently transferred to a morgue where he was discovered to be alive several hours later. The case is currently under investigation to determine why the medical staff ignored indications of vitality.
