Ankara implements strict security measures for NATO summit
Ankara is preparing to host a NATO summit involving representatives from 32 countries, including U.S. President Donald Trump, starting on Tuesday. To facilitate logistical operations and security, municipal authorities have implemented strict measures, including road closures and the temporary shuttering of certain shops. City officials are also conducting cosmetic upgrades, such as landscaping and concealing deteriorating buildings along airport routes. A ban on all public gatherings and protests has been enforced from June 28 until July 8. Tuncer Bakirhan, co-chair of the opposition DEM party, criticized these measures, claiming they severely disrupt daily life for residents. While some reports suggested the closure of city parks for security reasons, these claims have been officially denied. Local authorities have also introduced supportive measures, such as providing food to taxi drivers to mitigate the impact of the changes.
