Industrial fire in Oraiokastro causes environmental alert in Thessaloniki

A large fire broke out on the evening of Saturday, July 4, 2026, around 20:30 in Oraiokastro, Thessaloniki, primarily affecting a recycling facility and a textile factory. The incident resulted in a thick, toxic plume of smoke spreading over Thessaloniki, covering areas including the city center, the White Tower, and Kalamaria. Local authorities issued multiple evacuation orders via the 112 emergency system for the Anthoupoli and Filothei regions. Approximately 160 firefighters, supported by ground teams, vehicles, aerial assets, and the Deukalion unit, worked to contain the blaze, which was intensified by strong winds. Four firefighters were hospitalized at the 424 General Military Hospital, three with respiratory issues and one with an orthopedic injury. A 76-year-old man was arrested in connection with the fire, with investigations indicating he accidentally caused the blaze with his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Authorities have advised the public to use protective masks due to the presence of potential pollutants in the air.
