Large industrial fire contained in Oraiokastro, Thessaloniki
A significant fire broke out on the night of Saturday, July 4, 2026, in the Oraiokastro area of Thessaloniki, affecting a recycling facility and a textile factory. The blaze, fueled by strong winds, prompted the issuance of 112 emergency alerts for the evacuation of residents from Anthoupoli and Philothei to safety zones. Over 160 firefighters, 52 vehicles, five forest commando teams, and aviation units were deployed to combat the fire. A 76-year-old man was arrested for allegedly starting the fire accidentally while trying to dislodge his car from a slope, causing sparks; he was later released pending a preliminary investigation by the Fire Department. The fire resulted in toxic smoke spreading over Thessaloniki, leading local officials to warn citizens about air quality. While no civilian casualties were reported, four firefighters were hospitalized, two of them with respiratory issues. The blaze has been contained in the surrounding forest, with efforts now focused on cooling the industrial sites to prevent reignition. The incident caused significant damage to businesses and vehicles in the vicinity.
