Wildfires burn across Greece with major incident in Oraiokastro

A series of wildfires broke out across Greece on July 4-5, 2026, with 60 incidents recorded within 24 hours. A particularly challenging situation occurred in the Central Macedonia region, where 16 fires were reported, including a major wildfire in Oraiokastro, Thessaloniki. In Oraiokastro, 40 firefighters and 20 vehicles were deployed, and a 112 emergency alert was sent to Anthoupoli residents to evacuate toward Titan. Reports indicate that at least three large industrial businesses were destroyed in the area, and four firefighters were hospitalized. Additional fronts were active in Koufalia, Leipsydrio, and Kritsoni, while emergency operations were also conducted in Nea Kallikrateia, Halkidiki. Authorities attributed the difficulty to a high danger rating (category 4) and strong winds. The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is coordinating the response, with arson investigation units deployed to impacted areas.
