North Korea tests weapons systems on Kang Kon destroyer

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the testing of cruise missiles and electronic warfare systems on the 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon last Friday. This vessel previously suffered a partial capsizing during its launch in May 2025, which led to significant delays and subsequent repair efforts. Following the tests, Kim ordered that the vessel undergo final evaluations and enter service with the navy within two months. State media reports highlighted that the test event was observed by Kim, and at least one source noted the presence of his daughter alongside him. The ship's initial failed launch in 2025 resulted in public criticism from Kim, who demanded accountability for the negligence involved. Separately, the KCNA reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a reply letter to Kim regarding the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party of China. In his letter, Xi expressed a desire to strengthen long-term bilateral relations between the two nations.
