Memorial service held for victims of the 2011 Mari naval base explosion

A memorial service was held on Sunday at the Church of Saint Kosmas of Aitolos to honor Captain Andreas Ioannidis and Warrant Officer Kleanthis Kleanthous, two of the 13 individuals who died in the explosion at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari. The service was officiated by Bishop Nikolaos of Amathous. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis represented the administration and delivered a speech reflecting on the tragedy that occurred on July 11, 2011. During his address, Letymbiotis stated that the state must maintain its duty of care and avoid negligence in public administration. He acknowledged the enduring pain of the families and the National Guard, noting that the event remains a significant trauma for Cyprus. The spokesman praised the moral character and dedication of the deceased, emphasizing their commitment to their duty.
