Memorial service marks 13th anniversary of the Mari naval base explosion

A memorial service was held in Limassol to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the July 11, 2011, explosion at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Mari. The blast, which resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals, remains a significant event in Cypriot history. Attendees included Nikolas Ioannides, the Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection and son of Captain Andreas Ioannides, and Katia Kleanthous, the widow of Warrant Officer Kleanthis Kleanthous. During the event, Nikolas Ioannides expressed gratitude to the public for their sustained support following the tragedy. He emphasized that the sacrifices made by the victims continue to serve as a reminder of duty and responsibility. Despite the passage of time, officials noted that some systemic issues stemming from the disaster have not yet been fully addressed. The speakers connected the tragedy at Mari to other national milestones, including the 1974 invasion and the deaths of Isaac and Solomou. The memorial focused on honoring the bravery of those who lost their lives while serving their country.
