Cyprus government seeks to resume reunification negotiations
Cypriot government officials, including Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou and presidential press director Viktoras Papadopoulos, stated that Cyprus is working to restart formal reunification negotiations. These efforts are currently aligned with a plan facilitated by the United Nations Secretary-General. The government aims to convene an expanded international conference on the Cyprus issue, potentially taking place within the summer. Officials emphasized that any future resolution must adhere to the agreed-upon UN framework, the existing acquis, and European Union values to ensure a functional and sustainable settlement. The strategy involves a multifaceted diplomatic approach intended to break the long-standing stalemate. President Nikos Christodoulides has prioritized this initiative to achieve the liberation and reunification of the island. Officials noted that the process is ongoing through both public and private diplomatic channels.
