Diplomatic efforts on Cyprus and Turkish-EU relations continue
European Union leadership recently met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara to discuss EU-Turkey relations and the Cyprus issue. The Republic of Cyprus maintains that progress in EU-Turkey ties must be gradual, proportional, and reversible, strictly contingent on Turkey fulfilling its obligations regarding Cyprus. EU officials reportedly communicated these common positions to the Turkish leadership. While there is speculation regarding the feasibility of a five-party conference on the Cyprus issue by late July, officials continue to evaluate the situation alongside UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin. President Nikos Christodoulides noted that any positive outcomes will depend on Turkey's practical actions. Simultaneously, the Cypriot government is reopening an application platform to provide partial replenishment for depositors affected by the 2013 bank restructuring. Budgetary provisions are set for 2026, with a new relief plan scheduled for 2027 to address remaining claims up to specified caps.
