Diplomatic efforts to restart Cyprus settlement negotiations continue
The Cypriot government reaffirmed its commitment to resuming negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue under the United Nations framework. UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is scheduled to visit Brussels for talks following recent NATO meetings, subsequently traveling to Cyprus to consult with President Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman. Government spokespersons Konstantinos Letymbiotis and Yiannis Antoniou emphasized the necessity of a solution that ends the occupation and reunites the country. Officials noted that the European Union plays a catalytic role, as progress in Euro-Turkish relations is now linked to developments in the Cyprus problem. While the government remains open to negotiations, it rejects any process that lacks a solid foundation. Conversely, internal analysis suggests that Ankara is currently stalling, seeking concessions before committing to substantive discussions. The government also held memorial events for the 1974 coup victims, reiterating that the pursuit of a sovereign, independent state remains the top priority.
