European Commission appoints Raffaele Fitto as Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue
The European Commission has officially appointed Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as the European Union's Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue. Fitto will coordinate with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, to facilitate the resumption of peace negotiations and support a sustainable settlement in line with UN Security Council resolutions. President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the appointment, citing it as proof of the EU's upgraded commitment and the success of Cyprus's diplomatic strategy. Opposition politician Averof Neofytou noted that the appointment, combined with reports of a new peace plan, signals significant geopolitical developments. Meanwhile, government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis reiterated Nicosia’s call for an informal multilateral meeting, emphasizing the need for Turkey to show sincere political will. The Greek Cypriot side maintains its focus on a comprehensive solution and urges all parties to demonstrate the necessary determination for progress.
