Memorial services held for Vatyli fallen and Amargeti heroes
Two separate memorial services took place in Cyprus to commemorate individuals who died during the events of 1974. In Latsia, the annual national memorial for the fallen of the occupied village of Vatyli was held at the Archangel Michael Church, organized by the Vatyli Community Council. The memorial speech was delivered by the Mayor of Latsia-Geri, Christos Pittaras, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and a reception. Meanwhile, a memorial service was held in Amargeti for Athanasis Georgiou, who was killed on July 15, 1974, during the coup, and for Giannakis Georgiou, who remains missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion. The ceremony in Amargeti was organized by the local Community Council in collaboration with the families of the two individuals. A bust of Athanasis Georgiou stands in the church courtyard, while a memorial plaque commemorates Giannakis Georgiou. These events underscored the ongoing efforts to honor those who perished or went missing during the island's conflict. Participants included families, local government representatives, and community members.
