Revival of the Gialloureia track and field event in Limassol
On July 3, 2026, the Famagusta School Board and the Cyprus Amateur Athletics Federation (KOEAS) revived the 'Gialloureia' track and field games. Held at the Laniteio Athletic Center in Limassol, the event honors Petrakis Giallourou, an EOKA student hero. This was the first revival of the competition, which was traditionally held in Famagusta from 1965 until the 1974 Turkish invasion. The event included athletes of all age categories and served as a qualifier for international competitions. Notable attendees at the opening ceremony included Famagusta Mayor Dr. Simos Ioannou, GSE President Sofoklis Charalambidis, and KOEAS President Periklis Markaris. Organizers reported that the event successfully met its dual goal of honoring history and achieving high performance standards for young athletes. The event served as a symbolic occasion for the Famagusta community, which has remained displaced for 52 years.
